The Weaver's Loft
Peeli Kothi Lane
2
1
A loft above a working Banarasi silk-weaver's home. Handlooms clatter softly downstairs by day, and by evening the family shares stories over adrak chai on the terrace.
The neighbourhood
Peeli Kothi is the weavers' quarter, a Muslim-majority neighbourhood that has made silk saris for four hundred years. The lanes smell of jasmine and dye; every second door opens onto a loom.
A day here
Watch a sari come to life on the loom in the morning, wander to Sarnath in the afternoon for the Buddhist ruins, and return for a home-cooked biryani with the family. We can arrange a private visit to a master weaver's studio.
